Combat Lessons
Fighting Style
A set of sword and spear techniques passed down in Wolfkrone, a militant country in Europe.
Wolfkrone's philosophy of "indomitable fortitude" is reflected in its traditional fighting style, which involves saving up one's strength while searching for the enemy's weaknesses, then releasing that strength in a concentrated attack at the right moment. This technique has driven back countless foes of the nation.
Opponents who maintain their distance suffer a fatal thrust of the spear, while those who draw close are slashed with the swift attacks of the sword. It is an incredibly robust counterattack strategy that effectively utilizes both long and short weapons. Additionally, landing an attack with all one's strength imbues the weapons with fighting spirit, and this resolute conviction can be channeled into powerful final moves called "regalia arts" which can instantly turn the tide of battle. Honed for generations, Große Erbschaft can be considered the very symbol of the Wolfkrone Kingdom's stalwart resolve.
Style Lesson: Beginner
Deal Damage at a Distance with Vertical Spear Attacks
This style specializes in attacking the opponent from a distance with long-reaching spear attacks. Don't rely too much on the spear. though, as all spear attacks are vertical attacks that the opponent can easily evade with an 8-way run. You can stop them from doing so by sprinkling in some horizontal sword attacks first.
Using Thunder Wolf(33_66_99B+K) at the distance from which you start the round or Black Crystal (3B) while up close will deal a large amount of damage. If you find your opponent dodging these attacks with an 8-way run, you can punish them with moves like Dual Flame (6AA), Lightning Fire (33_66_99A), or Double Falcon (33_66_99[A+B]). If your opponent won't let up their guard, hit them hard with Blazing Shadow (1A).
Crush Your Opponent's Guard from a Crouching State
Crushing your opponent's guard with middle attacks and low attacks in this style is easiest while crouching. Use Hilt Strike (3A) or Unwavering Flame (22_88A) to stop your opponent in their tracks while shifting to a crouch. From there, you can strike them with the low attack Dark Kick (while crouching 3K) or the middle attack White Torch (while rising BA).
Style Lesson: Adept
Vie for Victory with Regalia Arts
This style makes use of unique special attacks called regalia arts. By performing certain attacks, you can imbue your sword or spear with a powerful aura, known as Sword Regalia and Spear Regalia, respectively. You can then use this regalia to unleash mighty game-changing regalia arts. Bear in mind that regalia does not carry over across rounds, so make good use of it. Also, gaining a regalia that you already have will instead charge the soul gauge, except for when you are soul charged.
The easiest regalia arts to perform are Royal Blade Feral Wolf(with Sword Regalia 6AAA) and Royal Spear Biting Wolf (with Spear Regalia 6AAB), as not only do they deal great damage, but they allow you to stay on the offensive even when guarded. Additionally, Royal Spear Exalted Fang (with Spear Regalia while crouching 3KBB) is a high-damaging low attack that's great against guarding opponents.
To gain regalia, you'll need to land specific attacks or perform certain actions in battle. For example, to gain Sword Regalia, you can use Lightning Arc (6BBA), and to gain Spear Regalia, you can use Lightning Horn (6BBB).
Use Focused Attacks to Gain Regalia
This style will also give you access to focused attacks, which are difficult to pull off but very powerful. They're performed by holding a button for a set period of time and then releasing it. These moves also net you regalia corresponding to the weapon you used to attack, so once you've mastered the basics, consider incorporating these attacks into your playstyle to really up your game.
Style Lesson: Master
Master Focused Attacks
Focused attacks award you regalia upon hit, giving you more opportunities to perform regalia arts. They are performed by holding a button for a set amount of time before releasing it (cX), and inputting certain commands when a move triggers allows you to perform different moves. Once you familiarize yourself with the following commands, you'll be better prepared to handle different situations.
- cA and cB: These attacks leave minimal openings when guarded and are ideal for feints.
- cA6 and cB6: These deal heavy damage and have good reach.
- cA4 and cB4: These have a slow start—up but count as break attacks, allowing for follow-up attacks.
- While crouching cA and cB: Powerful options to counter an opponent's attack or crush their guard from a crouching state.
Strategies for Performing Focused Attacks
Pulling off a focused attack in the heat of battle is extremely difficult. Until you're comfortable with this style, it's best to limit your practicing to certain situations. However, there are some tricks you can employ to make them easier to pull off.
To perform focused attacks, you need time enough to hold the appropriate button, but you can do this while performing a separate move to more easily integrate the focused attack. For example, when using Dual Flame (6AA) to stop an opponent's 8—way run, you can hold the input for the second attack, (making the move's input 6A[A]), and then release it after the attack to activate Solar Arc (cA). Additionally, if you use an 8-way run to evade an opponent's vertical attack, you can perform Power Declared (22_88B+K) and hold B (making the move's input 22_88[B]+K) to follow up with Empyrean Reproach (cB). Incorporating focused attacks into combos like this is a great way to make use of them.
Note that while holding a button you won't be able to use any attacks that require that button, but you will have access to moves that use K, and you can still escape throws with K.
Critical Edge
Silver Wolf
Properties
An easy—to-perform critical edge with a quick start—up. The first hit is a vertical attack, and even if it doesn't connect, you will still follow up with a horizontal attack, reducing the risk of being punished for missing the attack.
Tips
The attack is best incorporated into a combo to increase its damage. It puts you at a distance, so use that to your advantage by holding a button to charge a focused attack.
Soul Charge
Dominate with Powerful Soul Charge Combos
When activating a soul charge, you can continue the offensive against your opponent and stop their 8-way run with moves like Fire's Edge (while soul charged AAAB), or Howling Blitz (while soul charged33_66_99AB). If you successfully stop your opponent in their tracks, you can then follow up with the high-damaging Vermillion Stone (while soul charged 33_66_99BBB).
Gain Access to More Moves that Grant Regalia
Using a soul charge will also increase the opportunities you have to unleash regalia arts. After a soul charge, you can use Volcanic Splitter (while soul charged BAA) to gain Sword Regalia upon hit, or Fanged Reproach (while soul charged 6AB) to gain Spear Regalia upon hit. Additionally, Calamitous Sword (while soul charged 214A) and Calamitous Spear (while soul charged 214B) will grant you regalia even if they don't connect.
Hunter's Arc & Hunter's Reproach
Hilde's two soul attacks. Hunter's Arc (236A+B+KA) will net you Sword Regalia upon the second hit, while Hunter's Reproach (236A+B+KB) will net you Spear Regalia upon the second hit. These attacks will put you in a soul charged state and give you the opportunity to quickly follow up with powerful regalia arts.
Reversal Edge
Following Up with A
This attack prevents the opponent from moving sideways (K, 2, or 8). It doesn't deal much damage, but you can combo from it if it lands as a lethal hit. By using [A], you can shift to Calamitous Sword (cA) after the attack and gain Sword Regalia as well.
Following Up with B
This is the attack you'll want to land the most due to its high damage. It shifts to an attack throw upon hit, but if you hold [B] during the throw, you can combo it with moves like Moonlit Dance (cB6).
Following Up with K
An attack that sends the opponent flying. It doesn't do much damage, but it doesn't leave you wide open when guarded. Performing it near the edge of the stage is a great way to knock the opponent out of the ring or perform a wall combo. Use [K] to shift to Calamitous Spear after the attack and gain Spear Regalia.
Side Stepping
This action counts as a jump, which means that even if you are hit during it, you may only take a small amount of damage.
