Japan vs. USA Naming

Many Street Fighter fans are already aware of this, but the names of 3 Shadaloo boss characters are actually switched around between the original Japanese and the U.S. versions of the game. The demonic Akuma also has a different name between the regions.

M. Bison (USA)
Vega (Japan)
-- Dictator --
Balrog (USA)
M. Bison (Japan)
-- Boxer --
Vega (USA)
Balrog (Japan)
-- Claw --
Akuma (USA)
Gouki (Japan)

Supposedly, someone at Capcom feared a lawsuit from Mike Tyson, since the boxer looked exactly like him and had such a similar name ("Mike Bison ~ Mike Tyson"). As Street Fighter II became a global cultural phenomenon, this mixup of names became a problem when communicating between different regions. As a result, some people began using nicknames to refer to the three characters: Boxer, Dictator, and Claw.

For the purposes of this wiki, the American version of the names is generally used to avoid confusion from beginner players who are not aware of the naming differences.
