Introduction

Evil Ryu is a character of extremes. On the surface, Evil Ryu is a straightforward shoto character. His 236P Hadouken is a powerful zoning tool, and has no projectile limit, making it useful in conjunction with 63214P Shakunetsu Hadouken. His 623P Shoryuken is a stellar anti-air and reversal, and he can easily end combos with either 214K Tatsumaki or 236K Stomp. His normals cover a wide variety of uses, from strong offensive lights to far reaching mediums. His 6MP command normal is a fairly fast overhead, and 6HP is a powerful armored punch that can blow up mashers and help his confirms. His j.2MK is a fast overhead divekick with no height limit, allowing him to crack open even the most patient opponents. He can even whiff cancel any cancellable normals, making it very hard to properly whiff punish him.

The true strength of Evil Ryu, however, is his character defining super, Evil Install. This is a 4-bar super, meaning you must save up your full reserve of meter to use it, however it is more than worth the cost. Evil Install gives Evil Ryu two main buffs. The first is that he has functionally infinite meter. Once Evil Ryu spends any amount of meter, it will be temporarily spent, and as soon as he can move again it will regenerate it immediately. Alongside this, he can cancel specials into other specials at the cost of a bar of meter. These special to special cancels can be done on hit, block, and whiff. Combining that with his infinite meter, he can create absurdly long combos, safe on block reversals, and some of the most rewarding combos in the game. The only thing that can end Evil Install is the player doing a super, and the meter you have remaining at the end of a round still carries to the next round, allowing you to activate even earlier.

Evil Ryu is a great, simple character, with one of the most rewarding and creative mechanics in the game in his pocket. Your gameplan revolves almost entirely around getting into Evil Install, though this isn't much of a struggle as Remix has naturally high meterbuild. If you like characters with extremely creative gameplans, powerful and well-rounded kits, and supers so strong they define them as top tiers, Evil Ryu is for you.

Ryu got so mad he got a hole in his chest.

Strengths Weaknesses
  • Shoto: Evil Ryu has a tool for every situation, be it offense, defense, or neutral, even without Evil Install.
  • Evil Install: A super so centralizing, your whole gameplan revolves around it. Evil Install lets you cancel specials to specials, gives you functionally infinite meter, and never ends without you manually ending it with a super. Evil Install gives him some of the most oppressive offense, safe reversals, insane combo potential, and powerful zoning patterns, alongside the activation itself being an invincible screen freeze that can be cancelled into out of anything.
  • Meter Reliant: Since Evil Install is your win condition, and the safest way to get it costs a full 4 bars, you won't be able to spend much meter with Evil Ryu. This makes him weaker on a base level, as he can't access powerful reversals and combo extenders in the forms of his EX, and he struggles more in fireball wars.
  • Round 1: While still quite powerful, Evil Ryu before activating is a notably weaker character. Smart opponents will take advantage of this to steamroll you round 1, putting you at a disadvantage even once you're able to activate.
