Street Fighter EX2 Plus/Garuda

From SuperCombo Wiki

Story

Garuda was once a man who protected his village from an unknown threat and was hailed as a hero, but he lost his way and was overtaken by dark forces, becoming a demon. It is unknown what exactly caused him to turn to his present form, but in his current state, he exists through the power of negative emotions.

Garuda reappears in Street Fighter EX2, this time seeking out the soul of a blood relative. During the events of the game, Skullomania discovers the existence of Garuda, and sets out to defeat him, believing the demon to be a villain bent on world domination.

Overview

Strengths Weaknesses
  • Obscene damage
  • Simple, rewarding EXCEL routes
  • Shoto normals and cancels
  • Tougher execution
  • Airtight setplay takes lots of time in the lab
  • Complex mixups are tied to meter

Garuda is a bastard.

EX2+ Garuda already has it all: Strong normals, big damage, a DP-- But EXCEL and how he interacts with it put him over the top. Where other characters need to be more deliberate with their Custom Combo routing, Garuda nets easy confirms and gargantuan damage off just about everything. His routes end up looking like CCs from Street Fighter Alpha 2: Any starter into multiple specials and a big DP ender for the knockdown.

  • 5LK > 6HP > 236P x N > 623P just obliterates the opponent.
  • Kara 6HK xx EXCEL gives Garuda an OS Throw Tech, Air Reset, and a High/Low Mixup for one bar.

Despite his low skill floor, Garuda remains a very technical character- And he needs to be, if anyone is going to take down Area, Rosso, and Dhalsim! From a safejump, Kara EXCEL gives him a four way mixup: empty low, overhead low, double overhead low and triple overhead low. (Thanks Mizuumi!)

If his setups are done properly, Garuda can force mix with nearly zero accountability. Counter EXCEL activations don't work out of blockstun, so the opponent has to manually time their activation during Garuda's strings. Mess it up, and they'll eat a counter hit and die.
