The newest Mortal Kombat is actually the 9th game within the series.  Just like the first game it is simply known as "Mortal Kombat" and features a return to the game's original roots.  The gameplay consists of very detailed 3D models, with fighting animations based off of live action motion capture.  Unlike the more recent games, Mortal Kombat returns to a 2D fighting plane.  In another nod to the original series the story for this game actually takes place as an alternate version of the events that occurs within Mortal Kombat 1-3.

New Player Introduction

Welcome to Mortal Kombat. This wiki will act as a constantly evolving guide for all things Mortal Kombat. The goal of this site is to provide everything that you need to know about the game. As the game has yet to be officially released, the guide is a work in progress.

Know Your Fundamentals!

To get you off to a running start, we've prepared overviews to the fundamental game systems in Mortal Kombat. If you're a new player you want to check these out. For veteran players, these videos will quickly show you how Mortal Kombat is different from the other fighting games you may have played.

Characters

Template:Mortal Kombat (2011) Character Select

Exclusive Characters

Kratos is a character only available for the PS3 version of Mortal Kombat. There are no exclusive characters for the Xbox 360. Since Kratos is a character owned by Sony, it is unlikely he will ever be available on other systems. As a result, he is likely to be unavailable for tournament play.

Hidden Characters

At this time, the only known hidden characters are Cyber Sub-Zero and Quan-Chi. They both appear as visible characters on the bottom row of the character select screen.

DLC Characters

At this time only two downloadable characters are known, Kenshi and the Lady In Red (aka: Skarlet/Scarlet)

Terminology

In this guide there is quite a bit of jargon, slang and lingo used. In order to ensure all readers can take away the same understanding a list of terms has been provided.

Game Elements

In every Fighting Game, there are the basic, common factors that exist. Life Meters exist in just about every Fighting Game, as do Timers, for example. This section discusses these things, the factors that can affect the outcome of the battle that are not controllable by the player.

Combo Guide

This section of the guide will discuss the whys and whens and whats and hows of combos. If you are looking for combos for a specific character, check that character's individual pages for good combos for your character. However, if you are looking for how to create combos, build combos, and techniques on how to perform combos, this is the section for you. You'll learn why things work sometimes and then don't work other times. You'll learn some interesting techniques and shortcuts to performing combos.
